Cosmin Nicolae is a fan of change, both in life and in the music he produces under the moniker Cosmin TRG. The Romanian born, Berlin based producer has moved swiftly through genres since the beginning of his career in 2007. Inspired by garage and drum & bass, Cosmin (then known simply as TRG) started off in the dubstep realm with several releases including Put You Down, the very first release on Hessle Audio.
Cosmin’s self-diagnosed “musical ADD” kicked in a few years later as he moved toward techno with his first full-lengths on Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons: Simulat, in 2011, and Gordian, in April of this year. Gordian is a beautiful listen and speaks to the cerebral nature of Cosmin’s production. The title is a reference to the Gordian Knot, a metaphor for a seemingly obstinate problem easily solved by thinking outside the box. Cosmin mentally immersed himself in the album and the philosophy behind it (as he explained to Resident Advisor in this interview earlier this year), and it shows in the album’s intricacies.
Of his tendency to move between genres, Cosmin says,
“I am compelled to keep mixing it up. It’s my nature, I hear interesting sounds and ideas everywhere. I do have a certain framework in my mind, but I keep it open for new elements and build upon that.”
With this attitude, Cosmin fits right in at Make it New. His DJ sets combine deep techno and funky house into his own unique style. Check out his recent Boiler Room set below for a taste of what to expect, and be sure to catch him in the flesh this Thursday!
